my cotton pants soaked, a rod in hand, a Detroit-built Duck Watch on my wrist, and a Stetson straight from A River Runs Through It on my head. An Asheville butcher was giving me instructions on how to cast my soon-to-be-tangled fly rod. He let me fumble a bit before showing me the right way. There’s virtue in figuring things out on your own.

For me, this is a trip to another world. To the locals, it’s Monday.
